Contreras, a native of Mexico, began training on his own in 2016 after working for trainer Mike Reavis in Chicago for approximately 30 years.
After coming off a career year in 2020, he was among Oaklawn's top five trainers in 2021 with 18 wins.
Earned his first Oaklawn stakes win in 2019 with Rated R Superstar. Also, won the 2020 Fifth Season Stakes with Guest Suites. Both horses were sharp claims. He took Rated R Superstar for $62,500 and Guest Suite for $20,000.
First graded stakes winner was Matrooh, who won the Hanshin Stakes (G3) at Arlington in 2018 two races after being claimed for $25,000.
Among his best horses in recent years Inthemidstofbiz, a $20,000 claim who earned an automatic berth to the 2020 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) after winning the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2). She was unfortunately scratched from the race after developing a fever.
