Trainer

Born: April 24, 1956

• Earned his 1,000th career training victory March 1, 2013, when Ruthless Empire won the seventh race at Oaklawn as the 4-5 favorite.

• Won back-to-back runnings of the Azeri (G3) (2012-2013) with Tiz Miz Sue, who went on to impress New Yorkers when she won the 2013 Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap at Belmont by a half-length.
• Won the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga with Telling in 2009 and 2010.
• More recently, his top horses have been 2015 Indiana Oaks winner High Dollar Woman and Spring Included, winner of Oaklawn’s Spring Fever Stakes and Carousel Stakes in 2015. Both were campaigned by long time-clients Alex and JoAnn Lieblong, as was Telling.
• Grew up in Colorado where his father, Gerald, was a trainer at the now-defunct Centennial Race Track just outside Denver. A jockey in his youth, Hobby turned to training in 1976.
• Hobby’s wife, Metzie, is his assistant and daughter Karie is a manager in Oaklawn’s Food & Beverage department. Another important member of his team is Chindi, a multiple stakes-winning sprinter who raced until age 11 and now serves as his stable pony.
